Jacaranda Journals Information Session

What is Jacaranda? Do they accept poetry? What about this essay I wrote for class? What if I have a wild new idea for a topic I want to write about outside of class? Or what if I wanted to edit other people's work rather submit my own?

The Humanities Undergraduate Student Society (HUSS) is hosting an information session to answer all these questions and more about Jacaranda 2018.

We've got three exciting new publications this year all of which could be filled with your writing. But first come along to find out which publication will be best for you. Whether you're an essayist or poet, a budding academic or novelist to-be that wants to hone their craft with a short story, we'll let you know the who, what, when, and how of getting your work published with Jacaranda.

We'll also be providing an outline of the exciting writing and social launch events on offer with HUSS this year; these include workshops and live readings!

But first, come along and find out how you can get involved with the Humanities and Social Sciences writing community on campus.

Jacaranda Workshop #1: Pitching

You’re invited to our first workshop of the semester! This session will focus on you guys pitching your fantastic ideas to us. So come with your best brainstorming hats and get ready to bounce some ideas around!

This workshop is for BOTH 'Jacaranda's Best Non-fiction' and 'Jacaranda's Best Short Stories', so anyone interested in publishing their work with either chapbook should come along.

We’ll also be joined by some senior writing students from the Masters of Writing, Editing and Publishing program here on campus. They'll be on hand to offer all their expert opinions, tips and tricks for honing in your gem of an idea. We’ll also have some volunteers from the wider writing community joining us with specific experience and interest in their areas (non-fiction and fiction).

Please note that this session is ***not compulsory*** for you to submit to the Jacaranda Journals. But it is a great opportunity for us to run you through the standard of work we expect, how the publication's editorial process will work, and set you up on your way to writing or editing your best work ready for submission.

The workshop also gives us a chance to meet your lovely faces (and for you to meet ours, too!). We want to encourage everyone to get to know their peers and feel included in a supportive, engaging and inspiring community of writers. Even if you don’t have any ideas yet or aren’t sure if you want to submit, feel free to come along, listen in and get chatting with us all!

***Please note: you must be a member of HUSS to attend this workshop. If you aren't already a member, you can sign up here:https://www.joinit.org/o/uq-huss ***

Jacaranda Workshop #2: Check-in and Feedback

ou’re invited to our second workshop of the semester! This time we hope that you've been working hard on your potential submissions so that we can focus in on a general check up with how you're going and maybe even offer to edit a little of your work before submission.

This is a joint workshop for BOTH the non-fiction and short story publications due to launch at the end of semester 1, so anyone interested in either of those please come along!

Once again we’ll be joined by some senior Writing students from the Masters of Writing, Editing and Publishing program for their expert opinions, tips and tricks. We’ll also have some volunteers from the wider writing community joining us with specific experience and interest in non-fiction and short fiction. We'll run you through what we expect, how the editorial process will work, and set you up on your way to writing and editing your best work ready for submission.

Didn't attend our first workshop? No worries — if you've got some sort of draft or outline that you intend to submit, come along anyway! We can't wait to see your lovely faces again and catch up with everyone about what they've been working on.

***Please note: you must be a member of HUSS to attend this workshop. If you aren't already a member, you can sign up here:https://www.joinit.org/o/uq-huss ***

This event is also not compulsory for you to submit to the journal.
